Ponta do Pargo is the far western tip of Madeira, below the lighthouse on the high cliffs. It is wide open to west and north-west swells, and a heavy right breaks off the point over rock. It is a big-wave spot that needs a gun and can hold waves of several times head height. It only breaks now and then, and it is remote and dangerous.

Local tips

Look at it first from the lighthouse viewpoint high above the point. Getting caught inside is very dangerous here, so it is for experienced big-wave surfers only.

Getting there

Hard to reach: the point lies at the foot of high cliffs below the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse, off the ER101 between Paul do Mar and Achadas da Cruz.

Travel notes

How often it works
Inconsistent: surf-forecast and wannasurf say it only breaks some of the time, when a big west or north-west groundswell arrives in autumn or winter.
Crowd and vibe
Almost always empty; only a few big-wave riders know it.
Camping and vans
The only campsite on Madeira is the council-run Parque de Campismo do Porto Moniz in the Ribeira da Janela valley, about 11 km north-east as the crow flies. It reopened in 2026 after repairs. Nearest campsite about 11 km away.
Facilities
None at the point. The lighthouse has a small lighthouse museum and a viewpoint; shops and cafés in the village of Ponta do Pargo.

No official bathing site is listed on this cliff coast.
