Porthleven is England's most famous reef break, a powerful right that breaks over a rock ledge just west of the harbour entrance. On a good day it gives a steep, heavy drop, a hollow section and a short wall. It only wakes up on solid south-west swells in the colder months.

Local tips

Only for experienced surfers: the reef is very shallow at low tide and the line-up is tight and local. Watch from the harbour wall first.

Getting there

Park in town, or use the car park at Shrubberies Hill, then walk round to the west side of the harbour.

Travel notes

How often it works
It needs a big south-west groundswell, so it is fickle and mostly flat in summer, but it works when the north coast is blown out by northerly winds.
Crowd and vibe
Very crowded when it breaks, with a strong local crew. Wait your turn and keep out of the way of the locals.
Camping and vans
Bos Verbas at Praa Sands is about 6 km away, and several sites with camping pods are around Porthleven. Nearest campsite about 6 km away.
Facilities
A harbour town with shops, cafés, restaurants and toilets by the pier.
Water quality
Rated excellent in the 2025 English bathing-water classification (Porthleven Sands).
