The first surf beach south of the Loire estuary, a long sandy beach break at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins with lefts and rights over gently sloping sand. The waves are usually gentle and easy to catch, which makes it the area's main learning beach, though a strong west swell with no wind can produce fast, hollow waves. It needs a powerful west to west-south-west swell to work properly, since this coast is tucked in behind the estuary mouth. Kitesurfers share the beach whenever cross or onshore winds blow.

Local tips
The push toward high tide is the best window; one regular found it at its hollowest on a clean west swell with no wind. Near the Ermitage buildings the waves break faster over sandbanks, better for improvers than first-timers. Watch for currents and for the buoys marking bathing and kite zones, and give kitesurfers room when the wind is up.
Getting there
Free parking near the beach, with toilets, showers and summer lifeguards; the Atlantic Surf Academy runs lessons and rentals on the beach from April to October. A free Brevibus shuttle stop is about 500 m away.
