Areal de Santa Bárbara is a black-sand beach almost 1 km long on São Miguel's north coast, and the island's best-known surf beach. It has several sandbank peaks with lefts and rights: Tuká Tu Lá, Meio da Praia and Cantinho. Each can throw a hollow, fast A-frame, and which one works best changes with the sand. Surf schools work here all year.

Local tips

A local on wannasurf warns the waves are much stronger than on the south coast, with strong currents on some days: if nobody is out, don't go. Summer brings small, gentle waves for beginners.

Getting there

By road from Ribeira Grande or Ponta Delgada. Parking behind the beach and a short walk over the sand.

History

Santa Bárbara has hosted pro qualifying events for many years: the 2014 SATA Azores Pro, an ASP Prime event, was already its sixth edition, and Portugal's Frederico Morais won the QS6000 Azores Airlines Pro here in 2019.
