Praia do Pópulo is a sheltered black-sand beach a few minutes east of Ponta Delgada on the south coast. Most of the time the waves are small and gentle, under 1 m, which makes it a beginner beach. The rights are usually the better waves. A south-west swell with a north wind brings the best days.

Wannasurf locals say it is good for much of the winter as long as the wind is not east or strong south, and that it has worked better since the new Ponta Delgada marina was built. Weekends get crowded.
