Local tips
Go early, before the trade wind. Strong currents some days make it a spot for experienced surfers only. Low tide gives faster, steeper waves; high tide softer ones.
Getting there
Leave the GC-1 motorway at the Telde coast exits and follow the coast road to the beach. A car is the easy way to get there.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- One of the more consistent spots on the east coast, and often the place that works when the north coast does not. The wind decides most days.
- Crowd and vibe
- Often quiet on weekdays, crowded on good days and at weekends with local bodyboarders and surfers. Some localism is reported.
- Camping and vans
- Wild camping is not allowed on Gran Canaria. The island council (Cabildo) runs camping zones that need a permit booked online, and the closest legal option to camping by the sea is the campsite at Playa de Vargas on the east coast. The Canary Government's draft decree would ban tourist overnight stays in vans outside official campsites.
- Facilities
- No lifeguards and few facilities on the beach. One restaurant at the north end and more in the town.
- Water quality
- In the 2025 EU bathing-water results, Playa del Hombre was rated excellent, as in every year since 2015.
