Os Mortos is a peak at one end of Areas beach, east of Sanxenxo, deep inside the Ría de Pontevedra. It only breaks in a solid, long-period swell (well-spaced, powerful waves), around 40 days a year; in summer the busy beach is usually flat. When it works, the waves are fast and hollow over sand and rock and break close to the sand. The left is longer and better, the right shorter. It draws bodyboarders and a protective local crowd.

Local tips

The wave rises fast in shallow water. One mistake can put you on the rocks, so time your take-off well. A small local crew surfs it when it breaks.

Getting there

On the Pontevedra–Sanxenxo road at Areas, with parking a short walk away.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fickle. It sits deep inside the Pontevedra ría, so only big, long-period swells get in, which happens on about 40 days a year.
Crowd and vibe
A small local crew turns up whenever it breaks, and weekends get crowded. On days when the open beaches are also working, you may have it nearly to yourself. Be respectful in the water.
Camping and vans
No campsite close by that we could confirm. The paid Autocamper Sanxenxo área de autocaravanas is about 4.5 km west, and Camping Cachadelos about 8 km. Nearest campsite about 8 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, showers and sunbed and water-sports rental on the beach, with parking a short walk away.
Water quality
Areas holds Bandera Azul for 2026, which needs excellent bathing-water results the season before.
