Samil is Vigo's main city beach, 1.7 km long and shielded by the Cíes Islands at the mouth of the ría. It is usually flat in spring and summer and only gets waves in big winter storms, when it becomes the city's go-to spot, often a sheltered option when the open beaches are too big. The best banks are usually at the south end near the Lagares river mouth, with short, powerful waves over shallow sand. Water quality there can suffer after heavy rain. Opinions are mixed: it rarely breaks well, but it is memorable when it does.

When it works

✓ A big west or north-west storm swell of 3 m or more with a south-east wind around mid tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Normal swells are blocked by the islands, westerly wind blows it out, and at low tide the water is very shallow.

Watch out for

  • pollution
  • shorebreak

Best months

January, February, November, December

Local tips

Check it when Patos and A Ladeira are too big. Water quality can suffer from the nearby treatment plant, especially after rain.

Getting there

Signposted across Vigo, with a large public car park right in front of the surf area.

History

The seafront promenade was built over the original dunes in the 1970s.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fickle. The Cíes Islands and the ría block most swell, so it is usually flat in spring and summer and needs a strong winter swell to break.
Crowd and vibe
Few surfers on a normal day. On big winter swells it becomes the backup for Vigo's surfers, so the peaks by the river fill up. In summer the beach itself is very busy.
Camping and vans
No campsite in Vigo that we could confirm. The nearest is Camping Playa América in Nigrán, about 8 km south (March to September). Vans can use the paid Parking de La Guía on the far side of the city, about 8.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 8 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, showers, a Red Cross lifeguard post, public pools and a long promenade with cafés, next to a big car park.
Water quality
Poor record: Samil lost its Bandera Azul in 2025 after failed water tests and is not on the 2026 list. The city's sewage plant and the Lagares river mouth are nearby, so avoid it after heavy rain.
