A small cove on the Côte Sauvage between Le Pouliguen and Batz-sur-Mer where peaks break left and right over flat, mussel-covered rock shelves with patches of sand. The right is usually the better wave, holding a cleaner line as a south-west swell fills in, but rides are mostly short. It picks up swell better than the beaches of the La Baule bay and is the best-known spot in Loire-Atlantique, so the line-up fills quickly whenever it works. Locals admit it is rarely at its best and the standard in the water is high, so it suits confident intermediates and better.

Local tips
Sources disagree on tide: some say it works through the tide with the push best, others favour high tide over the rocks, which is when the rights are best lined up but also most committing. At low tide the mussel-covered rocks come close to the surface, so wear boots and pick your way in and out carefully. Expect a busy, competent line-up when it is on and respect the regulars; a south peak over a large reef is singled out as the hazard to know.
Getting there
Follow the Côte Sauvage road from Le Pouliguen toward Batz-sur-Mer and look for the La Govelle campsite sign; the small beach is right beside it, with free parking nearby. The Nomas surf school teaches here and SNSM lifeguards cover the beach on July and August afternoons.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Surf-forecast rates it quite reliable outside summer, while wannasurf says it only breaks sometimes. It is the most exposed reef on the La Baule coast, so it picks up a south-west swell when the bay is flat.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is the go-to reef for La Baule surfers, so it gets busy when it works, and the standard is high. Respect the regulars and wait your turn.
- Camping and vans
- A campsite sits right by the beach; the La Govelle campsite sign marks the turn-off. Camping Le Clein in Le Pouliguen is about 2 km away, and Flower Camping Les Paludiers in Batz-sur-Mer is about 3 km. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- In summer there is a lifeguard post, toilets, showers and drinking water, and the Nomas surf school teaches here.
- Water quality
- The La Govelle monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, but one of its ten 2026 samples failed. The Baie du Guec point, about 2 km east, has had weaker results.
