The Grande Plage at Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is the town beach below the seafront promenade, a sand-bottomed beach break with rights and lefts of ordinary power. It is one of the more consistent spots on this stretch, works through much of the tide and holds a surprising amount of swell, staying rideable on big days when nearby spots close out. The waves tend to spill, which makes it a favourite for beginners and longboarders, and several surf schools and the Surfing Saint Gilles club work from the beach. Walk south past the end of the promenade and the beach carries on for kilometres with quieter peaks.

When it works

✓ A west to west-north-west swell of one to two metres with an east to north-east wind, on the rising tide from mid to high.

When it doesn't

✕ Onshore wind, or a big high tide when backwash off the sea wall doubles up the waves and puts steps in the faces.

Local tips

The rising tide is usually the best time, but near high water the backwash off the promenade wall can make the waves lumpy and steep. A longshore current moves you down the beach quickly, so line yourself up with a landmark on the seafront. When it is over five or six feet the paddle out gets hard work. In summer the lesson groups take over the front of the promenade, so walk south for space.

Getting there

Follow signs for the Grande Plage past the harbour; out of season there is usually room in the car park by the beach, otherwise use street parking nearby. The surf club on the promenade has toilets and showers.

Travel notes

How often it works
Surf-forecast calls it very consistent outside summer, and wannasurf rates it regular. It picks up west swells and works at all tides.
Crowd and vibe
Wannasurf describes a mellow line-up with little pressure, because the hotter surfers go to harder breaks. Surf-forecast warns it can get very busy in summer, when lessons take over the front of the promenade.
Camping and vans
Camping Le Petit Pavillon and Camping Les Cyprès in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie are about 2–2.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
The surf club on the promenade has toilets and showers, and the town has cafés, shops and surf schools.
Water quality
We found no recent official results for the Grande Plage itself. The Boisvinet point in Saint-Gilles was rated good from 2024 to 2025, and all twelve 2026 samples were good. The beach is beside the harbour and the river Vie, so avoid it after heavy rain.
