A famous big-wave right that breaks below the Cliffs of Moher. It needs a large west swell to wake up and then gives huge, hollow and powerful waves in front of the cliffs. It is for elite big-wave surfers only.

Local tips

Only for experienced big-wave surfers with safety support. Most people watch it from the cliff path, which is a spectacular sight on a big day.

Getting there

The wave breaks off the foot of the Cliffs of Moher, south of Doolin. Most crews reach it by jet ski or boat; otherwise it is a long paddle. Never try to climb down the cliffs.

Travel notes

How often it works
Inconsistent: it only breaks on a few big, clean swells each winter.
Crowd and vibe
A small group of big-wave specialists and photographers on the big days.
Facilities
None at the wave. The Cliffs of Moher visitor centre is on the cliff top.
Water quality
Not an EPA-monitored bathing water, so there is no official rating.
