Fontenla is a big-wave spot off the rocky coast between Foxos and A Lanzada, in Sanxenxo. It only wakes up in large Atlantic storms, from about 3 m of swell. Then a big, long peak breaks over a mix of rock and sand. The wave is not very steep or hollow, but it moves a huge amount of water, and the currents get very strong.

When it works

✓ A big north-west or north swell of 3.5–5 m with a north-east or east wind, on a rising mid to high tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Anything under about 3 m leaves it flat, and westerly winds or a messy storm sea make it dangerous.

Local tips

Never paddle out alone, and learn the exits and hidden rocks before you go. In normal swells, surf Foxos or A Lanzada instead.

Getting there

There is parking in front of the wave, and the way in is easy.

History

A free-surf big-wave meeting called the Desafío Fontenla used to be held here with Galician surfers, but it has not run for some years.

Travel notes

How often it works
A big-swell-only spot. It needs storms of 3 m or more, so it breaks only a few days each winter.

Few local surfers ride it, so you may share it with only a handful of people.
Camping and vans
The campsites at Noalla, next to Foxos beach, are about 1 km away. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
None at the break. Foxos and A Lanzada have beach bars, showers and summer lifeguards.
