Grèves d'en Bas is a wild beach below the cliffs of Pléhérel, between the Anse du Croc and La Fosse, with Cap Fréhel in view. It is one of the most consistent waves in the Côtes-d'Armor and tends to work better than its neighbours. A westerly swell sets up peaks with fast, hollow sections and bowls, a step up from the gentler beaches of Sables-d'Or and Erquy. It is popular, the locals rate it highly, and the line-up fills quickly on good days.

Local tips

It is usually surfed from mid tide to around high; at low tide the waves lose shape. Expect some rips between the sandbanks, and on a busy day give the local crew space rather than paddling into the main peak. If it is packed, La Fosse and the Anse du Croc on either side often have shorebreak waves with nobody on them.

Getting there

There is beach parking off Rue des Plages above the beach, reached from the D34 coast road between Pléhérel-Plage and Cap Fréhel. The local surf school uses it for its improver lessons.

Travel notes

How often it works
One of the more reliable beaches on this coast. It faces open water to the west-north-west and catches both distant swells and local wind waves, so it often has surf when the bays further east are flat. Summer is still mostly flat, and onshore winds spoil many winter days.
Crowd and vibe
Locals rate it highly, and the water fills fast on good days. Some localism is reported at the main peak, so give the regulars room and don't paddle straight to the best spot. In summer the local surf school also brings improver groups here.
Camping and vans
Camping du Cap Fréhel, on the D34 in Plévenon, is under a kilometre east and has water and waste disposal for motorhomes. A short drive west in Pléhérel-Plage are the municipal Camping du Pont de l'Étang (900 pitches in the dune pine forest, no bookings, April to the end of October) and Camping d'Armor, about 500 m from the sea. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards in July and August, toilets, showers, free and paid parking off the D34, and restaurants nearby. Armor Surf School runs its improver lessons here.
Water quality
Ministry data, as republished online, rate Grèves d'en Bas 'good' every year from 2022 to 2025. A few single samples were average in summer 2025 and 2026.
