Calais beach is the town beach west of the harbour jetties, along the Digue Gaston Berthe, facing the Strait of Dover. It only wakes up when a strong north-easterly or northerly blows down the North Sea, and then gives short, weak, sloppy wind-driven waves that suit beginners and longboarders. It is a spot for locals who want to get wet on a windy day rather than a destination, but it can be rideable when the rest of the coast is too big, and the jetty gives some shelter in a strong north-westerly. Windsurfers rate the Calais–Blériot stretch as one of the region's better wave spots in north-easterly storms.

Local tips
Surf near the end of the jetty, which gives a little shelter in a strong north-westerly. The ferry harbour is right next door, so stay well clear of the pier and the shipping lane. Spring north-easterlies are the most reliable trigger, and expect rips when there is any size.
Getting there
From the A16 take a Calais exit and cross the town centre to the seafront. The beach is in town, with parking along the promenade and the sand right there.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Only breaks now and then. It needs a strong north or north-east wind pushing waves down the North Sea, and westerly weather leaves it flat. Its value is as a back-up: it can still be surfable when the open coast towards Wissant is too windy.
- Crowd and vibe
- Only a few surfers, even at weekends, so the water is relaxed. The beach is a busy family spot on summer weekends, lined with around 500 day chalets.
- Camping and vans
- Calais has a large motorhome aire on rue d'Asfeld, about 800 m from the beach. It has about 100 pitches with hook-ups and services, and a 72-hour limit. For a full campsite, Camping des Noires Mottes is in Sangatte, about 5 km west. Nearest campsite about 6 km away.
- Facilities
- The Digue Gaston Berthe seafront has toilets, showers, restaurants and snack bars, plus lots of free parking and summer lifeguards. There is no surf school in town.
- Water quality
- Official ARS tests rate Calais Centre Plage as good for 2025, as every year since 2018. The ferry port is right next door, so water near the jetty can be dirty after heavy rain.
