Sangatte's sandy beach lies between Calais, Blériot-Plage and Cap Blanc-Nez, crossed by rows of wooden groynes (lines of posts that hold the sand). It is exposed but very inconsistent: it needs a proper northerly gale and then the wind to drop, and even then the flat beach gives small, soft peaks that are fun rather than serious. Bodyboarders and funboarders enjoy it most, and windsurfers use it as a smaller fallback when Wissant is too wild in a south-westerly storm. Because of the cape, westerly wind tends to blow harder here than at Wissant.

When it works

✓ A big N to NW gale swell that holds while the wind eases and backs to the south or south-east, from low to mid tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Any southerly or south-westerly swell pattern, which leaves it flat, and strong westerlies blowing side-shore along the beach.

Watch out for

  • rips
  • currents

Best months

January, February, March, October, November, December

Local tips

The groyne posts get covered as the tide rises and become a real hazard, so surf the lower half of the tide and know where the rows are. The tidal current is noticeable, though gentler than at Wissant. If it is too small, Cap Blanc-Nez a few kilometres south-west is the better bet.

Getting there

Sangatte is about 10 km west of Calais on the D940 towards Boulogne; walk over the dunes or the sea wall onto the beach. Parking by the seafront in the village is tight, so leave the car at the village entrance or along the digue.

Travel notes

How often it works
One of the least reliable spots on this coast. It needs big waves from a north or north-west gale, and then the wind has to drop. In a typical spring month only about one day in twenty is clean.
Crowd and vibe
Empty most of the time, even at weekends, with a quiet, easy-going feel. Sangatte is one of the windiest spots in the region, so windsurfers and kiters use the beach on windy days.
Camping and vans
Camping des Noires Mottes is by the main beach access next to the town hall, about five minutes' walk from the sand. It opens mid-March to mid-November and has a few motorhome pitches. The nearest dedicated van stop is the large rue d'Asfeld aire in Calais, east along the coast. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
There are toilets by the stairs near the town hall, showers, a few restaurants and free and paid parking. Lifeguard cover is patchy outside high season, so check on arrival.
Water quality
Official ARS tests rated Blériot-Plage good every year from 2015 to 2025, but Sangatte Centre Plage has been only sufficient since 2023. One surf directory also lists pollution here, so avoid surfing just after heavy rain.
