Déolen is a small south-facing cove of sand and rock between Trégana and the Petit Minou, on the north shore of the entrance to the Brest roads. When the sand bar is in place it throws short, quick A-frame peaks, lefts and rights, at low tide. It only works a few times a year and depends on the sand: after some winters the bar is gone and it hardly breaks. Locals have long kept it quiet, and on its day it is rated a regional classic.

Local tips
Go at low tide and check it from the coast path first: if there is no sand bar there are no real waves. Rocks line both sides of the cove, so pick your way in and out carefully. If it is not working, Dalbosc and the Petit Minou are a few minutes east.
Getting there
Déolen lies off the coast road between Locmaria-Plouzané and the Minou. Park by the road above the cove and walk down the path to the beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fickle. The cove faces south into the entrance of the Brest roads, so it needs a solid south-west to west swell, about 1.5 m or more. The wave also depends on a sand bar that comes and goes. Expect only a few good days a year, mostly in winter.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually empty in the week and only a few surfers at weekends. It is a local secret spot, so keep a low profile, come in small numbers and let the regulars go first.
- Camping and vans
- The nearest campsite is the municipal Camping de Portez in Locmaria-Plouzané, open April to mid-October with motorhome services, about 2.5 km west along the coast. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
- Facilities
- None at the cove. Toilets, lifeguards in summer and the Minou Surf School are at Trégana and the Petit Minou nearby.
- Water quality
- Déolen is not an official bathing site, so it has no rating. The rated beaches either side, Trégana and the Minou, are excellent or good.
