Barbâtre, at the southern end of the Île de Noirmoutier, has a few short beach-break peaks along its west-facing shore, with patches of rock among the sand. The waves are usually soft and sloppy, rights and lefts that rarely run more than a few dozen metres, though on a good day the peaks can open up and get reasonably quick. It is fickle: surf-forecast rates it among the least consistent breaks on this coast and summer is mostly flat. Its real use is as a relaxed, uncrowded option for all levels when a solid west swell has the mainland beaches closing out.

A longboard or a fun shape most days; a shortboard is only worth it on the bigger swells.

When it works

✓ A west swell of one to two metres or more with a light north-east wind, from mid tide upwards; it needs a decent groundswell to get going.

When it doesn't

✕ Small summer swells rarely reach it, and any westerly wind leaves it weak and messy.

Watch out for

  • rocks
  • currents

Best months

January, February, March, October, November, December

Local tips

Sources disagree on the tide: wannasurf and mondo.surf favour a rising mid to high tide, while plages.tv and local blogs prefer the falling tide and find it mushy right at high water, so it is worth checking both. Autumn is the season most locals point to. There is no surf school or board hire near the beach, so arrive with your own gear.

Getting there

Cross to the island by the bridge or, at low tide only, the Passage du Gois, turn left at the first roundabout into Barbâtre and follow the 'Plage' signs; the beaches are a short walk from the road (rue du Camping area).
