La Grande Côte is the wild, dune-backed beach at Fromentine, running south from the Noirmoutier bridge and the Fromentine channel along the edge of the Pays de Monts forest. It is known far more as the area's main kitesurf beach than as a surf spot, and little is written about its waves. What surf there is comes as small, crumbly beach-break peaks over a gently sloping sand bottom, with the swell trimmed by Noirmoutier to the north and the Île d'Yeu to the south-west. It suits beginners and anyone happy with a quiet, unpressured session.

When it works

✓ A west swell of a metre or more with a light east to north-east wind around mid tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Small swells barely register here, and a westerly or sea breeze leaves it shapeless; on windy days the water belongs to the kitesurfers.

Watch out for

  • rips
  • currents

Best months

January, February, March, April, September, October, November, December

Local tips

Stay well clear of the Fromentine channel at the northern end, where the tidal flow into the Goulet is strong and boats pass between the Braillard buoys. The beach is long, so walk south away from the busier campsite end to find an empty peak. On windy afternoons, share the water carefully with the kite launch zone.

Getting there

Follow the Route de la Grande Côte from Fromentine to the beach car park, then cross the dunes on the marked paths. There are no lifeguards on this beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
It only works once in a while. The Île d'Yeu blocks much of the swell, so the waves are usually soft, and summer is often flat.
Crowd and vibe
It is very rarely crowded. The northern end near the campsites is the busiest, so walk south for an empty peak.
Camping and vans
Sandaya La Grande Côte and Camping Le Grand Corseau are both about 1 km from the beach. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
There are summer toilets and a lifeguard post at the main access, but no cafés or surf shop on the beach itself.
Water quality
La Grande Côte was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and all eight 2026 samples were good.
