Saint-Jean-de-Monts has a huge, flat town beach running south-east from the Estacade pier towards the Golf, Demoiselles and Salins beaches on the road to Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. The bottom is all sand and the waves are rights and lefts of ordinary power, made soft and often sloppy because the Île d'Yeu filters the incoming swell. It works through the whole tide and rarely gets crowded, which makes it one of the Vendée's easiest places to learn. It only comes alive a few times a month in the cooler seasons; summer is often flat.

Local tips
The most-used peak is around the Estacade, where the town's water-sports centre gives surf lessons; further south the Demoiselles and Salins beaches offer more room on the same kind of wave. Because the bottom stays fairly even, the tide changes the wave less than at most spots, so you can surf whenever the wind is right. Check a forecast for long-period groundswell, as short windswell rarely gets past Yeu with any shape.
Getting there
The beach is right in town along the seafront promenade, with the Base Nautique on Avenue de l'Estacade; numbered ramps (cales) give access along its length, and parking is on the seafront roads.
