The central beach of Notre-Dame-de-Monts is a long, flat sand beach in front of the pedestrian seafront, with shifting sandbars and the town's water-sports centre at its northern end. The Île d'Yeu filters the swell, so the waves are mostly small, soft and forgiving, the kind of surf that suits first lessons and longboarders. Like the rest of the Monts coast it only works now and then, mainly on a decent westerly groundswell outside summer. The neighbouring beaches to the north and south, such as Les Régates and La Braie, offer the same kind of wave with even more space.

When it doesn't

✕ Small summer swells, onshore wind or a south-west swell blocked by Yeu leave it weak and messy.

Local tips

Look for the bank that is holding a defined peak, as the bars move with storms and the waves can be closer to the shore at some stages of the tide. In summer, the lifeguarded bathing zone in front of the centre is for swimmers, so surf away from it. The pôle nautique hires out surfboards if you travel without one.

Getting there

The beach lies along Boulevard de l'Océan, with ramps down to the sand and several free car parks along the promenade; showers, toilets and cafés are close by, and the beach is lifeguarded in summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
It only works once in a while. The Île d'Yeu filters the swell, so the waves are usually small and soft, which suits beginners. Summer is often flat.
Crowd and vibe
Few surfers come here. In summer the beach is busy with families, and swimmers have the lifeguarded zone in front of the centre.
Camping and vans
The municipal Camping de l'Orgatte is about 1 km away. Camping Le Pont d'Yeu and Camping La Guillotière are about 1.5 km. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
There are toilets, showers, drinking water, cafés and a summer lifeguard post, and the pôle nautique hires out surfboards.
Water quality
The central beach was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025 and holds the 2026 Pavillon Bleu. In 2026, one of its eight samples was only average.
