The Pointe aux Oies is a rocky point just north of Wimereux, on the way to Ambleteuse, in front of the Dunes de la Slack. Flat rock slabs and sand bars shape peaks both ways on a westerly swell, best around mid tide; rides are usually short but run 50–150 m on a good day, and several locals call it the best spot in the Pas-de-Calais when it works. It does not break often, so it is popular and sometimes crowded on good days, and the rips are strong. Storms and big tides strip the sand and uncover old peat and tree stumps from an ancient forest.

Local tips

Mid tide is the time, when the sand bar in front of the slabs works. Check the tide carefully, because the usable beach changes a lot through the tide. Rips are strong here, so look for them before paddling out, and stay clear of the rocks along the point and the edges of the beach. Kitesurfers launch here on windy days, and there are never lifeguards.

Getting there

From the D940 coast road between Wimereux and Ambleteuse, park by the sea and take the stairs down. From the Pointe aux Oies car park the path to the beach is rough and not maintained; the Parking des Allemands on the D940 has a staircase about 100 m from the water. The dunes behind are protected.

History

The point lies within the Grand Site de France des Deux Caps, labelled in 2011.

Travel notes

How often it works
Unreliable and slow to get going. It needs a decent west swell with an easterly breeze, and rates only about 2 out of 10 for consistency. Summer tends to be flat. It is also a good back-up when the waves are too big elsewhere.
Crowd and vibe
It is one of the best-rated waves in the Pas-de-Calais, so it gets busy whenever it works, weekdays included. Kitesurfers and windsurfers launch here on windy days. Be patient and wait your turn.
Camping and vans
Camping L'Eglantier in Ambleteuse, just to the north, is about 200 m from the sea and takes tents, caravans and motorhomes. To the south, Wimereux has the 155-pitch Camping Municipal L'Olympic on rue de la Libération; check its seasonal opening dates. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
Facilities
The point has no facilities, only roadside car parks and stairs. Wimereux, a short drive south, has cafés and restaurants, and the École de Surf du Nord teaches at the Club Nautique on boulevard Alfred Thiriez.
Water quality
The point is not an official bathing site. The nearest ARS-tested beaches are Wimereux, rated excellent for 2025, and Ambleteuse, rated good. The Slack river reaches the sea at Ambleteuse just north, so expect dirty run-off after heavy rain.
