Wissant is the best-known wave of northern France: a long sandy bay between Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez, open to the north-west and west. Most days the gently sloping beach gives soft, forgiving waves for beginners and longboarders; lower tides and a solid north-westerly swell make them punchier, hollower and faster, and the rising tide can bring surprisingly strong sets. It is above all a famous kite and windsurf spot, and they are everywhere when it blows, so surfers usually get the clean spells after a storm once the wind drops. The tidal current along the bay is strong, especially in big surf on a rising tide.

- Boards
- Longboards and mid-lengths on most days; shortboards when a solid north-westerly swell lines up on the lower tides.
When it works
✓ A solid W to NW swell of 1–2.5 m with a light south or south-easterly wind after a gale has passed, around low and rising mid tide.
When it doesn't
✕ Strong onshore westerlies while a storm is still blowing, flat summer high pressure, or a big spring tide, which floods the beach by the promenade and softens the waves at high water and leaves the sea far from the car park at low.

Local tips
Go at low tide for hollower waves, but expect a long walk because the sea goes out a long way; the push from low to mid tide is often the best moment. With a rising tide and a westerly wind the current along the bay can be very strong, so keep checking your position against the beach. Windsurfers and kiters share the water and are generally friendly, but keep out of their way when it is windy.
Getting there
Leave the A16 between Calais and Boulogne at the Wissant exit; the village is about ten minutes' drive. Parking is easiest at the north-eastern end of the village, and only cross the dunes on the marked paths. The École de Surf du Nord gives lessons on the beach.
History
The bay is part of the Grand Site de France des Deux Caps, a label given in 2011 and renewed over a larger area in 2025.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- The most reliable wave in northern France. The bay faces straight into west to north-west swell from the Channel, so forecasters call it fairly consistent in winter, with about a third of February days clean. Summer is mostly flat, and storms often make it too windy.
- Crowd and vibe
- Only a few surfers, even at weekends. But the bay is a major windsurf and kite spot, and the beach by the promenade fills up in summer. The sailors are generally friendly if surfers stay out of their path.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Municipal La Source on rue de la Source (D940) is about ten minutes' walk from the beach through a back gate. It opens mid-March to mid-November. Its motorhome service area is inside the campsite, and vans must book at least one night. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- There are toilets, showers, a restaurant on the promenade, a summer snack truck and the École de Surf du Nord on rue Arlette Davids. Lifeguards work in July–August, and the free car park at the end of rue Arlette Davids fills up fast.
- Water quality
- Official ARS tests rate Wissant Centre Plage as good for 2025, after two years at sufficient (2023–2024). It was excellent in 2018–2020.
