Équihen-Plage is a small resort about ten kilometres south of Boulogne, where a long, flat sand beach opens out below the cliffs and dunes as the tide drops. Waves break softly over the shallow beach, which is why the École de Surf du Nord uses it as its main teaching base. On bigger westerly swells it gets messier rather than better, so it is a learning beach, not a spot for experienced surfers.

When it works

✓ A small to medium W to SW swell with an easterly wind, around mid tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Strong onshore wind or a big stormy swell, which makes the waves break all at once on the shallow beach, or high tide on big tides, when the beach almost disappears.

Watch out for

  • currents

Best months

April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November

Local tips

Plan around the tide. The beach is wide on the falling tide and shrinks to almost nothing at high water on big spring tides, so lessons are timed to the tide. Kiters report currents here, and land yachts use the flat sand at low tide. Head south for a quieter stretch towards Saint-Étienne-au-Mont.

Getting there

Park at the main beach car park above the shore, where the surf school is, and walk down. Lifeguards cover the beach in summer, with toilets and showers near the path down.

Travel notes

How often it works
It gets the same west swells as the rest of the Boulogne coast. The long, flat beach keeps the waves small and gentle. It works best for learners on small to medium days and is often flat in summer.
Crowd and vibe
Most people in the water are surf school groups, with lessons timed to the tide. Few other surfers come here. It is a relaxed learning beach.
Camping and vans
Camping La Falaise on rue Charles Cazin is about 200 m from the sea and opens April to October. A town motorhome aire on rue du Beurre Fondu, near the centre and a short walk from the beach, takes about 20 vans for roughly €12 a night. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, changing rooms and showers at the beach entrance, restaurants in the village and summer lifeguards. The École de Surf du Nord is based at the main beach car park.
Water quality
The ARS rated the water good every year from 2015 to 2025, never better or worse.
