Praia da Luz is a small sandy cove in Foz do Douro, Porto's seaside district, with rocks along almost the whole shore. When a big swell arrives, a powerful right peels over the rock reef in front of the beach bar, and on good days it runs for 150 m or more. It only breaks a few times each winter, so it is a city spot for experienced surfers.

Local tips
Wannasurf and surf-forecast both say it works best around high tide. Watch a few sets first to see where the rocks are and where the current runs. Stay out after heavy rain.
Getting there
It is in the city: follow Avenida do Brasil along the Foz seafront to the Praia da Luz beach bar. Parking along the avenue is limited at weekends; city buses run along the seafront.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It needs a solid winter swell to start, from about 1.5–2 m offshore, and wannasurf contributors say it holds swells of 4 m and more. Most of the year it is too small, so it is a big-swell alternative to the beach breaks nearby.
- Crowd and vibe
- Wannasurf contributors find it empty most of the time, but surf-forecast warns that crowds come when it breaks. Respect the locals and wait your turn on the peak.
- Camping and vans
- Orbitur Canidelo, across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, is about 4 km away. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 4 km away.
- Facilities
- Lifeguards from mid-June to mid-September, a sunbathing terrace and the Praia da Luz bar-restaurant above the beach. Cafés, shops and buses along the Foz seafront.
- Water quality
- We couldn't find the latest official rating for the Foz bathing water. A stream drains through pipes in the rocks just north of the beach, and wannasurf lists pollution, so avoid it after heavy rain.
