Praia do Aterro is a 1 km sandy beach north of Leça da Palmeira, across the road from the Matosinhos refinery complex; surfers also call the spot Sacor. Sandbars between scattered rocks give lefts and rights, and on the outside a longer left breaks next to the rocks. It is a popular surf and bodyboard beach for Porto's young crowd.

Local tips

Look for the long left beside the rocks on the outside when the swell is up. Wannasurf rates mid to high tide as best. Surf in the morning before the wind, and respect the regulars.

Getting there

Drive north from Leça da Palmeira along Avenida da Liberdade; the beach is opposite the refinery, with parking and a short walk to the sand.

Travel notes

How often it works
Open to the west and north of the Leixões breakwater, so it picks up most swells; surf-forecast rates it fairly consistent all year, with winter the best season. It needs about 1 m of swell to start, and the quality depends on the sandbars.
Crowd and vibe
Few surfers in the week and crowded at weekends, according to wannasurf. Contributors describe a relaxed mood with many longboarders on small days, and ask visitors to respect the locals.
Camping and vans
Orbitur Angeiras, on the coast to the north, is about 6.5 km away. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 6.5 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards from mid-June to mid-September, and a beach bar above the sand. Shops and cafés are in Leça da Palmeira.
Water quality
We couldn't find the latest official rating for the Aterro bathing water. Wannasurf lists pollution as a danger, and in late August 2026 APA advised against bathing at nearby Cabo do Mundo and other Matosinhos beaches after contamination, so check the APA notices and avoid it after heavy rain.
