Póvoa de Varzim's main surf spot is the rocky reef at Salgueira, in the 'zona dos banhos' at the north end of the town beach. It is a powerful left over rock that suits bodyboarders best, though surfers ride it too, and it holds big swells. Sandy beaches nearby, such as Lagoa, are better for learners.

Local tips

Wannasurf says mid tide is best, neither full nor low; higher tide suits longboards. Watch the current, and let the regulars have their waves.

Getting there

In the town, ask for the 'zona dos banhos'. Park along the seafront avenue; the reef is right off the promenade.

Travel notes

How often it works
It needs a decent swell to work but holds big winter swells, when most beaches nearby close out.
Crowd and vibe
A local bodyboard spot. Few in the water in the week and crowded at weekends, with localism noted by wannasurf contributors.
Camping and vans
Orbitur Rio Alto at Estela, north of the town, is about 7 km away. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 7 km away.
Facilities
A town beach with lifeguards in season, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, beach concessions and wheelchair access. Cafés and shops along the seafront.
Water quality
Salgueira was rated excellent in APA's latest annual classification and flies a Blue Flag in 2026. APA's August 2025 report noted short-lived E. coli incidents at Póvoa beaches, so check the notices after heavy rain.
