Punta Umbría is a holiday town on a sandy spit between the Odiel marshes and the open sea, just west of Huelva city. Its long golden beaches pick up fun peaks over sand in autumn and winter, from soft walls to the odd hollow section. Most days the waves are small and gentle, which suits beginners. It only gets serious after a proper Atlantic storm.

Local tips

Move along the beach to find the best sandbank, since the peaks change after storms. Wannasurf lists it as rarely breaking, so treat it as a bonus when a swell lines up.

Getting there

Easy: drive into town and park near the seafront promenade; there are boardwalks to the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
Inconsistent. It needs a good west or south-west swell to push into the Gulf of Cádiz, and it is often flat for weeks in summer.
Crowd and vibe
Surfmarket counts usually 10–20 surfers on a good day. A mix of locals from Huelva and learners; friendly.
Camping and vans
Camping Playa La Bota is about 200 m from La Bota beach and 5 km from the town, with pitches for tents, caravans and campervans. Nearest campsite about 5 km away.
Facilities
A busy summer resort: lifeguard posts, showers, toilets and car parks, plus bars and restaurants in town.
Water quality
The monitored points on Punta Umbría's beach were rated excellent in the EU bathing-water assessment (EEA data from Náyade) for the last three seasons.
