In the fishing village of Yport, between Fécamp and Étretat, a left peels over the flat chalk platform in front of the pebble beach, along the cliff at one end of the bay. On a good day it is often called the longest left in Normandy, with rides of 150 m or more and the odd hollow section. It only comes alive in stormy weather, with a swell well over 1.5 m from the west to north, so some locals say it breaks only a few times a year; it is best on the lower half of the tide, and rips pull along the platform. The cliff blocks the south-west winds that spoil most of this coast, and in a very big swell a right also works on the north side of the bay.

When it works

✓ A big W to NW swell over 1.5 m with S to SW wind, from low to mid tide, ideally on the falling tide.

When it doesn't

✕ A swell under 1.5 m, onshore north-westerlies, or high tide on the shingle.

  • rocks
  • rips
  • shorebreak

Best months

January, February, March, October, November, December

Local tips

The lefts are best on the falling tide. Rips get strong along the rock as the swell builds, so pick your paddle-out and keep an eye on your drift. The wave ends in a shorebreak in front of the casino that is better left to bodyboarders, so kick out before it.

Getting there

The break is right in front of the village beach on Boulevard Alexandre Dumont, with parking close to the water.

Travel notes

How often it works
Wannasurf says it only works some of the time, and some locals say just a few days a year. The point needs a big west to north swell of a metre and a half or more. When it does work, the cliff blocks south-west winds and keeps it clean.
Crowd and vibe
Wannasurf reports no one out on weekdays and only a few surfers at weekends, because the point so rarely works. On good days, there is one take-off spot along the rock, so wait your turn.
Camping and vans
Camping Le Rivage on Rue André Toutain is about 150 m, or five minutes' walk, from the beach. It opens from late March to early October and has a motorhome area from about €19 a night. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, showers and lifeguards in July and August, plus restaurants and a water-sports centre in the village. No surf school was found.
Water quality
ARS Normandie rated Yport beach excellent for 2025.
