Local tips

Watch the wind forecast, not the swell forecast: go when a strong onshore wind has blown for some hours, and catch the last waves as it eases or turns. Stone groynes divide the beach every 150 m or so; keep away from their heads. Kite and windsurfers share the water, especially towards Brasilien. The Baltic is about 2–5 °C in winter, colder than the North Sea: a 6/5 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.

Getting there

Park at the beach car park on the Deichweg at Kalifornien or the paid car park at Brasilien; parking in the village is hard in summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
The Baltic has no ocean swell and almost no tide. Waves only come with a strong onshore wind of about force 5–6 or more, so it works a handful of days a month in autumn and winter at best, and the waves die soon after the wind drops.
Crowd and vibe
Friendly, with surf school groups and kite and windsurfers; it gets busy when the wind is right at weekends.
Camping and vans
Camping Ferienpark California is right behind the beach. Vans can stay overnight at a simple site behind the dyke at Brasilien. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
Two surf schools with rental (at the Deichweg and at Buhne 33/34 in Brasilien), cafés and toilets along the beach.
Water quality
The EU bathing-water sites Kalifornien Kurstrand and Brasilien were rated excellent in 2023, 2024 and 2025 in the European Environment Agency data.
