The beach in front of Soulac's seafront is a sand-bottom beach break whose banks are shaped by currents and sand coming out of the Gironde estuary, so its quality changes a lot from one season to the next. It picks up less swell than the open beaches further south and usually needs a solid swell before it gets going; then it can be good, mostly with lefts and the odd hollow tube on the falling tide. The water is often a degree or two colder than at Lacanau and browner, coloured by the estuary. In summer it is a lifeguarded family beach used by local surf schools on small days.

Local tips
Locals come here when Lacanau is too big, so the best days usually coincide with large swells elsewhere. Look for the bank that is holding and expect it to move after each storm. Mid tide on the falling tide gives the hollowest waves; at high tide they get longer and softer. The currents linked to the estuary can be very strong, especially on big days.
Getting there
Soulac is reached from Bordeaux by following the Médoc and Pointe de Grave signs; the beach is right in front of the town centre and seafront, a short walk from the streets behind it. It is lifeguarded in summer; dogs are not allowed on the central beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Wannasurf says it only works on very big swells, when Lacanau closes out, while surf-forecast calls it reliable. In practice it is a big-swell spot that comes alive in winter.
- Crowd and vibe
- It is rarely crowded. Wannasurf lists it as empty on weekdays and with few surfers at weekends.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Les Sables d'Argent and Camping Le Palace in Soulac-sur-Mer are about 1.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
- Facilities
- The beach is right in front of the town centre, with shops and cafés behind it and a summer lifeguard post. Dogs are not allowed on the central beach.
- Water quality
- The town-centre monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, all six 2026 samples were good, and the central beach holds the 2026 Pavillon Bleu. Surf guides still warn that the Gironde estuary can make the water murky.
