Sligo's surf town beach, in front of the promenade under Knocknarea mountain. The sand never stays put. In the middle of the beach there are split peaks, at the north end a long right peels over boulders, and near the river mouth at the southern end there are more waves. When the banks are in good shape, it can be excellent.

Local tips
Bring a friend rather than surfing on your own: currents get strong as the swell grows. The sea comes right up to the sea wall at high tide, so keep off the beach at that time.
Getting there
Strandhill is 8 km west of Sligo town, next to Sligo airport. The car park is next to the beach and fills up in summer.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Good consistency all year. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, because winter swells are often too big and summer can be flat.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually quiet and a little reserved. On good days, the large local surf community and nearby Sligo town can fill the water. Be polite, know what you are doing, and you will be welcome.
- Camping and vans
- Strandhill Caravan & Camping Park, under Knocknarea and a two-minute walk from the promenade, takes tents, caravans and camper vans. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Car park, toilets, showers, surf schools, surf shops, cafés and pubs on the promenade; a lifeguard in summer.
- Water quality
- Strandhill is not an EPA-monitored bathing water, so there is no official rating. Surfnerd describes the water as very clean.
