A left that breaks over a flat rock ledge by the old castle at the mouth of the Easkey river, and one of Ireland's classic waves. The take-off is steep, then comes a fast tube section and a long wall that bends round towards the shore. It holds its shape from head high to well overhead.

Local tips

It holds its shape in the south and south-west winds that blow out most of the coast, so it is often the call on a windy day. Don't arrive in a big group or with cameras, and remember it is always a bit bigger than it looks from the shore.

Getting there

Park in the car park by the castle on the east side of the village, a few steps from the take-off.

Travel notes

How often it works
A consistent, good-quality wave from autumn to spring, best in winter.
Crowd and vibe
Busy, with a strong local crew and travelling surfers camped by the castle. The mood is friendly if you are respectful.
Camping and vans
Campers often park up in the castle car park, which has toilets and changing rooms.
Facilities
Toilets and changing rooms by the castle; the surf centre in the village has a café and information.
Water quality
Easkey is not an EPA-monitored bathing water. Surfnerd notes that water quality was poor in the past but improved after a new sewage plant, though the river can still carry farm run-off after heavy rain.
