Ireland's best-known big-wave spot: a thick, powerful wave over a rough rock reef off the headland. Nothing breaks until the swell is far bigger than a person. Big days are usually surfed with jet skis, to tow surfers in and to pull them out, because the rocks are so close to the take-off. On 8 March 2012 surfers rode waves of up to about 15 m here.

When it works

✓ A long-period north-west swell of 4 m or more with a south-east wind, from mid to high tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Any chop on the wave face makes it dangerous. At low tide too much reef is exposed.

Local tips

This is a wave for experienced big-wave crews with water safety, not for regular surfers. For everyone else, the headland road is a superb, safe place to watch on a big day.

Getting there

Take the coast road round the headland from Mullaghmore village and pull in carefully at the side of the road.

History

On 8 March 2012 surfers and windsurfers from around the world rode waves of up to about 15 m off Mullaghmore Head.

Travel notes

How often it works
Rare: it needs a big winter storm swell and the right wind at the same time. Once it breaks, it can take very large waves.
Crowd and vibe
Only a small crew of big-wave surfers and jet-ski teams; many spectators watch from the headland.
Facilities
Free roadside parking on the headland. Mullaghmore village has a pub, cafés and toilets near the beach.
Water quality
Mullaghmore Beach (in the bay, not the reef) was rated Excellent by the EPA in 2025, after Sufficient and Good in earlier years.
