A long pebble and boulder beach at the southern tip of Torö, in the Stockholm archipelago, about an hour from the city. Stockholm surfers know it as a legendary spot: A-frames along the beach and lefts off the rocks at the east end. The waves are often powerful and churned up, but on a clean day they are very good.

Local tips

Bring food and drinks: the nearest café is a long way off. The beach is long, so there is usually plenty of room. Watch the wind forecast more than the swell forecast: go when a strong onshore wind has blown for some hours, and catch the waves as it eases or turns. The sea drops to about 2 °C in winter: a 6/5 wetsuit or thicker, with boots, gloves and a hood.

Getting there

Drive the E73 south from Stockholm towards Nynäshamn, then follow the signs to Torö; about an hour from the city.

Travel notes

How often it works
The Baltic has no ocean swell and almost no tide. Waves only come with a strong onshore wind, so it works a handful of days a month in autumn and winter at best, and the waves die soon after the wind drops.

Busy when it works, but there is plenty of room, and the line-up is polite.
