When it doesn't

✕ Southerly winds and summer, which is mostly flat.

Best months

January, February, March, October, November, December

Local tips

Bring everything you need. Food, swimming and other places to stay are at Sudersand on the east side. Watch the wind forecast more than the swell forecast: go when a strong onshore wind has blown for some hours, and catch the waves as it eases or turns. The sea drops to about 2 °C in winter: a 6/5 wetsuit or thicker, with boots, gloves and a hood.

Getting there

Drive north from Visby on the Fårö road and take the ferry over to Fårö; Ekeviken is at the far north of the island.

Travel notes

How often it works
The Baltic has no ocean swell and almost no tide. Waves only come with a strong onshore wind, so it works a handful of days a month in autumn and winter at best, and the waves die soon after the wind drops.
Crowd and vibe
Very few surfers, even on good days.
Camping and vans
Ekevikens Camping is about 800 m away. Nearest campsite about 0.8 km away.
Facilities
None at the beach.
Water quality
There is no EU bathing-water site at Ekeviken; the nearest, Sudersand about 2 km south-east, was rated excellent in 2023, 2024 and 2025 (European Environment Agency data).
