Afife is a wide, wild beach backed by dunes, between Âncora and Viana do Castelo. It is an exposed beach break with lefts and rights over sand, with rocky patches towards the ends. Surf-forecast rates it as one of the most reliable spots in the Minho, and it can get busy when the surf is up.

When it works

✓ A 1–2 m west or north-west swell with an east wind, at any tide on good banks.

When it doesn't

✕ Big winter storms close it out, and the summer north wind blows it out in the afternoon.

Watch out for

  • rips
  • rocks

Best months

March, April, May, September, October, November

Local tips

Go early in summer before the north wind. Look for the bank with a clear channel next to it, as rips are strong when the swell is up.

Getting there

Follow the road from Afife village down to the beach car park. The beach is a short walk over the dunes.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very exposed, so it picks up almost every swell and often has waves when sheltered spots are flat. It needs offshore wind and sorted banks to be good.
Crowd and vibe
It can get busy on good days and summer weekends, but the beach is long enough to spread out. Few tourists surf here outside summer.
Camping and vans
Orbitur Caminha is about 10 km north and Orbitur Viana do Castelo, at Cabedelo, about 12 km south. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 10 km away.
Facilities
In the bathing season: lifeguards, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, a beach bar and a car park.
Water quality
Rated excellent in APA's latest annual classification; Blue Flag beach in 2026.
