Cabedelo is the long beach on the south side of the Lima river mouth, across the bridge from Viana do Castelo. It is the city's surf beach, with mellow beach-break peaks over sand and several surf and kite schools. It is also one of Portugal's best-known kitesurf and windsurf beaches, because the summer north wind blows hard here.

When it doesn't

✕ Afternoons in summer, when the north wind turns it into a kite beach, and big swells that close out.

Local tips

Surf in the morning; by midday in summer the kiters take over. Keep away from the river mouth on the outgoing tide, where the current is strong.

Getting there

Cross the old bridge from Viana do Castelo and follow the road to the beach. There is parking near the hotel and the surf and kite schools.

Travel notes

How often it works
It picks up most north-west and west swells. The north wind is the main problem: it is strong on many summer days. Winter and autumn mornings are the best bet.
Crowd and vibe
Quiet on weekdays and busier at weekends, according to wannasurf. Surf schools work here all year, and kitesurfers fill the beach on windy afternoons.
Camping and vans
Orbitur Viana do Castelo is in the pine wood behind the beach with direct access to the sand, and the INATEL Cabedelo campsite is next to it. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards in season, a first-aid post, toilets, showers and beach bars. Several surf and kite schools rent gear and teach.
Water quality
Rated excellent in APA's latest annual classification; Blue Flag beach in 2026. APA lists it among beaches with waves of special value for surfing.
