The town beach of Vila Praia de Âncora has a small river mouth and a harbour wall at its southern end, towards the Gelfa beach. Sand builds up around the river mouth and gives short, punchy lefts and rights. Surf-forecast calls it reliable and often crowded, and it is one of the busier spots on the Minho coast.

When it works

✓ A 1–2 m west swell with a north-east to east wind, around low tide.

When it doesn't

✕ High tide makes it slow and fat, and a strong north or west wind ruins it.

  • crowds
  • pollution

Local tips

Check both sides of the river mouth; the best bank changes with each winter. After heavy rain the river water is dirty, so give it a day or two.

Getting there

The beach is in front of the town centre and easy to reach on foot, with street parking along the promenade.

Travel notes

How often it works
Open to west swells and sandbanks fed by the river, so it works fairly often. Quality depends on how the sand sits around the river mouth.
Crowd and vibe
Often crowded when it is good, with local surfers and bodyboarders. Weekends and summer are busiest. Wait your turn at the peak.
Camping and vans
Orbitur Caminha in the Mata do Camarido is about 7 km north. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 7 km away.
Facilities
A town beach with lifeguards in season, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, beach bars and wheelchair access. Shops, cafés and restaurants are a short walk away.
Water quality
The bathing water was rated only 'acceptable' in APA's latest annual classification, lower than the nearby beaches. Avoid surfing right after heavy rain, when the river carries run-off.
