Cantos is a short, very explosive right over boulders and rock at the rocky point by the small harbour of Mougás, in a small bay on the open coast of Oia. The first section tubes with a thick lip, and the lower section gets shallower and hollower. It needs a solid swell and works best at high tide, breaking with a lot of power for its size. The take-off is tight and surfed by experienced locals, and many people wear a helmet.

Local tips

A helmet is a good idea. The way in over slippery rocks has its own currents, and the wave is unforgiving when big. Only for advanced surfers.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fickle. It needs a solid west swell and a big high tide, because of the way the bay faces, so it only works a few times each winter.
Crowd and vibe
Quiet most of the time. When it fires, the tight take-off fills quickly with ten or twenty experienced locals, so wait your turn and read the line-up first.

Camping O Muiño in Mougás is about 1.5 km north and opens March to mid-October. Camping Mougas, a little further north, opens April to mid-September. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
