Monteferro is a long left that runs along the rock reef at the base of the Monteferro peninsula in Nigrán, just west of Pico de Patos. It is one of the classic waves of the Ría de Vigo. The take-off is clear, fast and steep, then the wave flattens out with good sections for turns, which makes it a longboard favourite. It only breaks at high tide but holds up to about 3 m. The mood in the water is more relaxed than at Pico de Patos.

Getting there

Very easy, with parking by the beach.

History

Monteferro has been surfed since the 1980s and is a long-standing longboard spot in southern Galicia.

Travel notes

How often it works
Needs a solid north-west or west swell to get past the Cíes Islands, so it is a winter wave. It also only works on the upper half of the tide, which cuts the number of good sessions.
Crowd and vibe
Busy on good weekends, when Vigo surfers spread out from Patos. Visitors have counted around fifty people on the left on classic days. The line-up is mostly longboarders and calmer than at the Pico.
Camping and vans
The nearest campsite is Camping Praia América in Nigrán, open about March to September. Nigrán has no área de autocaravanas. The closest motorhome service point is in Baiona. Nearest campsite about 3 km away.
Facilities
No services at the break itself; Monteferro has a picnic area with tables and barbecues, and the cafés, showers and surf schools of Patos are close by.
Water quality
No official water rating found for this rocky spot.
