El Pico is a fixed, triangular rock reef at the western end of Patos beach, often called the best wave in the Ría de Vigo. It breaks both ways: the long right is usually the better one, with sections for turns and tubes, and the left is short and powerful. The rock bottom means it doesn't depend on the sand, but it needs a decent swell to break. It is crowded whenever it works, and the local pecking order is strict and goes back decades.

Local tips
The take-off is fast and catches out surfers who aren't used to rock. Never drop in on anyone or paddle around them for a wave: locals watch the water from the road wall. Weekdays are less tense; at weekends, try Monteferro or Prado instead.
Getting there
Semi-urban, with parking by the wall above the break. The Praia da Abra bar is in front of it.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Works only on a decent north-west or west swell, because the Cíes Islands shelter this corner of the ría. When the swell is there, the rock bottom makes it more dependable than the sandbanks next door. Autumn and winter give most of the good days.
- Crowd and vibe
- The most crowded and territorial wave around Vigo. Visitors have counted dozens of surfers at the point on good days, and locals get first pick. Keep to the queue, don't drop in, and come on a weekday if you can.
- Camping and vans
- The nearest campsite is Camping Praia América in Nigrán, open about March to September. There is no área de autocaravanas in Nigrán. The closest motorhome service point is a fuel station in Baiona. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
- Facilities
- No facilities at the rocks themselves, but the Patos beach showers, toilets, cafés and surf schools are a short walk away.
- Water quality
- We found no official water rating for this reef. Neighbouring Patos beach is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list.
