A wild beach under the chalk cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez, on the Sangatte side of the cape. Big sandbanks, 100–200 m long, lie off the beach and break both ways when a large swell runs over them. It mostly needs a northerly swell left by a winter gale; a westerly swell also reaches it but gives weaker, poorer waves. On a good day the banks peel cleanly at about head height, far better than the flat beach at Sangatte next door, but the current over the banks is strong and the cliff is unstable.

When it works

✓ A N to NW swell of 1.5 m or more after a winter gale, with the wind dropping and turning S to SE, from mid to high tide.

When it doesn't

✕ South-westerly weather, which leaves it flat behind the cape, onshore northerlies still blowing hard, or any small day.

  • currents
  • rips
  • rocks

Best months

January, February, March, April, October, November, December

Local tips

Wait for the gale to pass and the wind to settle offshore, because the window is short. The current over the banks is heavy, so only paddle out if you swim well, and do not surf alone. Stay away from the foot of the cliff: rock falls are frequent, and if you hear a crack, move away fast.

Getting there

Take the D940 from Calais towards Boulogne, through Sangatte and up to the Dover Patrol memorial on the cape. Park by the memorial; the path down to the beach starts on its south side. The cliff top is about 33 m above the sea.

History

Cap Blanc-Nez is one of the two capes of the Grand Site de France des Deux Caps, labelled in 2011.

Travel notes

How often it works
Rarely works. Surf-forecast rates it inconsistent: even in April, its best month, clean waves show only about one day in twenty, and summer is nearly always flat. It needs a big northerly swell, which the Strait of Dover only gets after strong gales.
Crowd and vibe
Empty on weekdays and at weekends, according to wannasurf, and surf-forecast says it is rarely crowded. Walkers crowd the cliff top on fine days, but very few people surf here.
Camping and vans
Escalles, just inland, has two campsites. Camping Le Blanc Nez on rue de la Mer has about 70 pitches and opens roughly April to early November. Camping Les Erables has terraced pitches at the foot of the cape and also takes motorhomes. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Nothing on the beach itself, only the cliff-top parking by the memorial. Shops and food are in Escalles and Sangatte, and the nearest surf school is in Wissant.
Water quality
Not an official bathing site, and the nearest tested beaches have poor records. The ARS rated Escalles Centre Plage, on the other side of the cape, insufficient for 2024 and only sufficient for 2025, and Sangatte Centre Plage only sufficient since 2023. Stay out after heavy rain.
