Chassiron is the reef at the northern tip of Oléron, below the black-and-white lighthouse, and the island's most serious wave. Peaks break over an uneven rock shelf crossed by the walls of old stone fish traps: the lefts are long, walling and fairly forgiving at small sizes, while the rights are shorter, hollower and harder. It is one of the more consistent spots on the island and holds well over two metres, when it turns powerful and fast. Shallow rock, sea urchins and strong currents make it a place for experienced surfers only.

Local tips

It is a low-tide wave, so time the walk out on the dropping tide and leave before the flood pushes over the reef. On small to medium swells look at the south side of the point; on bigger swells the north side tends to be better. Wear booties against the urchins, consider a helmet, never dive head first, and never surf it alone. Locals are relaxed with visitors who come in small numbers and say hello.

Getting there

Follow the D734 north through Saint-Denis-d'Oléron to the Chassiron lighthouse, where there is a free car park with toilets. From there it is roughly a ten-minute walk of about 500 metres across the rocks and fish-trap walls to the reef.
