The best-known wave on Ré's south coast breaks in front of the Pergola car park at La Couarde-sur-Mer. A shallow rocky shoal under the sand, beside a wooden jetty, makes the waves pitch hard, and it is often described as the hollowest wave on the island, with short barrels on its day. There are two peaks, one each side of the jetty, giving lefts and rights. It needs a proper west to south-west swell and stays flat or mediocre the rest of the time, so on the few days it works it suits experienced surfers more than beginners.

When it doesn't
✕ Small swells or anything from the north-west, which barely reach this coast, and any onshore south or west wind, which ruins it quickly.

Local tips
Pick a side of the jetty and keep well clear of it, since it is the main hazard here. The waves break fast and dump, so expect late drops and close-outs as well as the odd barrel. Local opinion is mixed: some rate it the best south-coast wave, others find it overrated compared with the north-west point, so check it before committing a whole day.
Getting there
