Les Huttes is the northernmost beach on Oléron's open west coast, a long strip of sand between the Chassiron point and Saint-Denis-d'Oléron. It faces west-south-west but sits close enough to the tip of the island to take north-west swell head-on, while south-west swells have to be bigger to get in. The waves are fast, hollow and usually short, breaking on shifting peaks close to the beach, with a few rocks among the sand. On good days four or five peaks can throw barrels; when it is big, the shorebreak and the currents make it a spot for experienced surfers.

When it works

✓ A north-west swell of one and a half to two and a half metres with an east wind, on the rising tide from mid to high.

When it doesn't

✕ Low tide, when the shallow banks and the reef patches turn the shorebreak dangerous, or a westerly onshore wind.

Local tips

Rips here can be strong and sudden, especially with a solid swell, so watch the water before going in and stay close to the peaks you can read. The smaller the swell, the shallower the banks, so do not dive in head first. In summer yellow buoys mark a swimmers-only zone and a kite area lies to the north; go early in the morning or outside the holidays for an emptier line-up.

Getting there

Take the main island road north towards Saint-Denis-d'Oléron and turn left at the sign for Les Huttes; there is free parking behind the dunes and then a walk over the dune to the beach. A lifeguard post operates in summer and surf schools work from the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
It faces north-west, so it works best on north-west to north swells. South-west swells need to be bigger to reach it. Most days you get one or two peaks in the shorebreak, and only on rare days several hollow peaks.
Crowd and vibe
Weekdays are often empty, but weekends get crowded. Summer brings swimmers, schools and bodyboarders, while the rest of the year it is a relaxed place.
Camping and vans
Camping La Campière and Camping Les Payolles in Saint-Georges-d'Oléron are about 2 km away. Camping Le Sabia in Saint-Denis is about 4 km. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
There is free parking behind the dunes, a summer lifeguard post and surf schools on the beach.
Water quality
We found no recent official results for Les Huttes itself. Chaucre beach, about 3 km south, was rated good from 2022 to 2025, but one of its seven 2026 samples failed and one was only average.
