The town beach of Comillas sits below the seafront promenade, sheltered by the harbour at its western end. It needs a strong swell to break. Then it gives easy, shifting peaks of about a metre for beginners and improvers. In rare, very big swells a long, hollow right breaks over rock by the harbour, beyond the cape to the west. That wave is for experienced surfers only.

Local tips

The beach is only worth a look when the open coast is big. The rock right needs 2 m or more of swell from the right angle and works from low to mid tide. It is usually empty because it so rarely breaks.

Getting there

The beach is in the town, with a promenade, a large car park and several ways down to the sand. Surf schools and other services are nearby.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fickle. The beach needs a strong swell, and the reef right west of the harbour only wakes up on rare, very big swells of 2 m or more.
Crowd and vibe
The surf is usually empty because it so rarely breaks. In summer the town beach is very busy with bathers.
Camping and vans
Camping Comillas is right by the beach, about 500 m away, open at Easter and from June to September. The Comillas-Ruiloba área de autocaravanas is just under 1 km east. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
Large car park, a promenade with several ways down to the sand, and plenty of cafés, shops and surf schools in town.
Water quality
Comillas once had the Bandera Azul but is not on the 2026 list. We could not check its official water rating.
