Los Locos is a 500 m beach below limestone cliffs just west of Suances, reached by stairs and one of the busiest and best-known surf spots in Cantabria. It is consistent all year. There is a long left at the western end and peaks either side of a central channel. Sopico is a powerful, hollow left that barrels on bigger days. El Huerto is a fast, hollow right along the cliff at the eastern end that needs 1.5 m or more. The bottom is sand mixed with rock, so the shape changes with the tide. The way it faces makes the summer north-east wind cross-offshore.

When it doesn't

✕ West or north-west wind blows straight in, very big swells bring heavy close-outs and strong currents, and El Huerto needs a big swell at high tide.

Local tips

The channel in the middle of the beach is the easiest way out. Low tide uncovers rock slabs, especially near the cliffs. High tide shrinks the beach and needs more swell. The local crowd is large, talented and territorial, and Santander surfers join on good forecasts, so be patient and respect who has the wave. Beginners should stick to the central peaks with a school.

Getting there

From Suances town, drive up the hill to the beach car park. Walk down the long stairway in the cliff.

History

People have surfed here since the late 1960s, when local pioneers began riding waves alongside the first foreign visitors.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very consistent all year. It faces north-west into the open sea and gets surf on most days when there is any swell.
Crowd and vibe
Often crowded, and packed in summer and at weekends when Santander surfers drive over. The local crew is big, skilled and quick to take the best waves, so wait your turn and respect who has priority.
Camping and vans
Camping Suances is in the town, about 1 km from the beach. Camping Hermanos García in Cuchía is about 2 km away. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards from the Red Cross with a rescue boat in summer, a first-aid post, showers, drinking water and picnic tables; cafés, surf shops and schools are in Suances.
Water quality
Holds the Bandera Azul for 2026, and every official sample from 2023 to July 2026 was rated fit for bathing, with very low bacteria counts.
