Valdearenas is the long, dune-backed beach of the Dunas de Liencres natural park, running west to the Pas river mouth. It catches almost any swell and has seasonal sandbars of good quality, with some rock patches, giving powerful rights and lefts. Las Duchas is a long, easy right, and El Copa is a peak close to shore that is better at high tide. Fun on small to medium days and heavy on big ones, it is one of the best-known surf spots in Cantabria, with a big car park and beach bars.

Local tips
The western end by the river mouth has the strongest and least predictable rips. On big days a rip on the left can pull people towards the rocks. The beach is long, so you can find a quieter peak than the main one, which is crowded and best left to good surfers. Autumn mornings often have light offshore wind. Locals are easy-going with visitors who show respect.
Getting there
Leave the A-67 at Liencres and follow the signs to the coast. From the car parks it is a 5 to 15 minute walk through the dunes to the sand.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- One of the most reliable beaches in Cantabria. It faces open sea, so it picks up almost every swell from the north and north-west. Summer can still be flat for long spells.
- Crowd and vibe
- Very busy, and packed at weekends: guides talk of around 50 surfers on the main peak on a good day. Locals are fine with visitors who are polite and don't drop in, but beginners should stay off the best peak.
- Camping and vans
- No campsite in the dunes park. The closest are Camping Hermanos García in Cuchía, across the Pas estuary (about 4.5 km in a straight line, longer by road), and Camping Costa San Juan de la Canal at Soto de la Marina, about 6 km east. Nearest campsite about 4.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Big car park, a shower, beach bars and surf schools, plus a large lifeguard team in summer because of the strong currents.
- Water quality
- Valdearenas is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list, and we could not check its official rating. The Pas river flows out at the western end, so avoid that corner after heavy rain.
