Goulien is the southern end of the Anse de Dinan: a sheltered beach break with several peaks and the peninsula's main learning beach. It needs a sizeable swell to break, roughly twice what the open beaches need, and then a flat, gently sloping sand bottom gives long, soft waves, softer than La Palue, which makes it a sheltered option on big winter swells. Big rocks hide at the south end at mid and high tide.

A foam board or longboard for learners; a shortboard or step-up on the big winter days, when the slow-rising waves take a lot of paddling to catch.

When it works

✓ A 2–3.5 m W swell with an E to NE wind, from mid to high tide on the rising tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Small swell, which leaves it flat, onshore westerlies, low tide near the rocks, or a strong swell at high tide, when a shorebreak and current build near the southern cliff.

Local tips

Stay away from the south end, where rocks hide underwater at mid and high tide and a current runs along the cliff; a five-minute walk north usually means more room. On big swells there is no channel to paddle out through, so expect plenty of duck-diving. In summer and school holidays the beach is busy with swimmers, who have priority. It is sheltered from the southerly winds that blow out the neighbouring spots.

Getting there

From the D791 towards Crozon, follow the signs for Goulien (campsite, hamlet or beach) and park by the dunes, a short walk from the sand. Parking is limited, so arrive early in August.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fairly consistent from autumn to spring. It needs about 2–2.5 m of swell out at sea to start, but handles 4 m and more. That makes it the go-to spot on stormy days. In summer it is mostly flat.
Crowd and vibe
In summer and school holidays the surf schools and campsite make it the busiest beach in the bay. The rest of the year it is rarely crowded and the mood in the water is relaxed. Weekdays are often empty, and in August the small car park fills early.
Camping and vans
The 3-star Camping de la Plage de Goulien is about 100 m from the sand. It has around 135 pitches, a bar, a snack bar and a small shop, and opens roughly late April to mid-September. The beach car park is daytime only: overnight stays have been banned since 2020, and fines of about €135 have been reported. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Surf Oxygène gives lessons about 20 m from the beach, and the campsite next door has a bar, snack bar and shop. The beach is listed as having lifeguards in summer.
Water quality
It is an official bathing site and rated good every year from 2022 to 2025. In 2026 every test was good except one average result on 15 July.
