A heavy left-hand reef by the small harbour at Kilcummin Head, on the western side of Killala Bay. The wave runs over a boulder bottom. With some size it gets thick and barrels, and the bigger the swell, the better it is. On days when most spots are maxed out, this one can be at its best.

Local tips

Only experienced surfers should paddle out. Know how you will get back in before you go. The current is strong, and the rocks on the inside are unforgiving. When it is working, let the locals have their waves.

Getting there

Kilcummin Head is north of Killala, on the western side of Killala Bay. Park behind the harbour wall, where there is free roadside space.

Travel notes

How often it works
Needs a decent swell, so it breaks less often than the beaches, but it can handle sizes that close out the rest of the coast.
Crowd and vibe
When it works, the line-up fills with local surfers. Be patient and wait for your turn.
Facilities
Roadside parking only. Shops and pubs are in Killala.
Water quality
Not an EPA-monitored bathing water. Surfnerd warns that water quality in Killala Bay is bad close to most river mouths, so stay out after heavy rain.
